Angolan government to expand transmission and access networks of Angola Telecom

The consortium of companies Gemcorp Commodities Global DMCC and Geoglobal Consulting Corp will rehabilitate and expand Angola Telecom's rural and metropolitan transmission and access networks, for US$188 million, it was announced.

According to a press release from Gemcorp to which the Lusa agency had access, the contract was signed between the Ministry of Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Social Communication and the consortium of companies.

The project aims to reposition and boost Angola Telecom, through the rehabilitation and expansion of rural and metropolitan transmission and access networks, covering two essential areas for the operation of the national operator, namely the renewal and expansion of its telecommunications assets and the its transversal restructuring for the creation of internal processes that allow it to improve the conduct, invoicing and efficiency of its services.

With this project, the Government hopes to improve and expand Angola Telecom's transport and access networks, with a view to increasing national and international interconnection, coverage and quality of rural connectivity; the qualification of national staff in the field of telecommunications; and the improvement of telecommunications infrastructure in the country, to directly benefit a population of three million people, namely inhabitants of areas that are currently not served by any other national operator.

The consortium formed by Gemcorp Commodities Global DMCC and Geoglobal Consulting Corp undertakes “to carry out the project within the deadlines established when it was awarded” and to “contribute professionally and effectively to the modernization of telecommunications in Angola”, as it is of one of the key development sectors of any country, the document emphasizes.
