Austrian Chancellor visiting Angola: “Austria will support water supply project”

Austria will support the water supply and agricultural development project in Angola. The announcement was made this Tuesday by the Austrian chancellor, Karl Nehammer, who is on an official visit to Angola.

According to a statement from CIPRA, which VerAngola had access to, the project was mentioned by João Lourenço at the meeting with the Chancellor of Austria, which took place at the Presidential Palace, as part of his visit to Angola.

On the occasion, Karl Nehammer announced his country's support for the referred project. "The project that the President spoke about, I heard about it for the first time, but I can already say that Austria will support this water supply project and that it involves the question of agriculture. Therefore, we have the Minister of Agriculture in our delegation to to be able to discuss these issues", he said, quoted in the statement.

According to the note, at the joint press conference with João Lourenço, after the meeting, the Austrian chancellor stressed the importance of "partnerships between companies" from both countries in various projects.

"Many leading Austrian firms (in Angola) have various projects, from turbines and equipment for dams to the installation of hospitals. This joint and cooperative work shows that there is great potential for cooperation with Africa, Angola and the European Union", he stated.

In addition, Karl Nehammer also highlighted the "fundamental role of Angola as a partner in promoting stability and security on the African continent", reads in the statement.

According to the Austrian, adds the statement, "the talks revealed the existence of several fields and projects in which cooperation can still be achieved", having also stressed the importance of "strengthening and establishing closer cooperation between the European Union and Africa, to face future challenges together".

"Cooperation and joint work between Angola and European countries are fundamental for us to face the great challenges of the future", he said, quoted in the note.

The chancellor of Austria also took the opportunity to invite João Lourenço to visit Austria, in order to "observe how the country built its economic structures over time", and "on that occasion, Austrian and Angolan ministers will be able to exchange experiences and ideas".

In turn, João Lourenço, speaking at the end of the meeting with Karl Nehammer, informed that Angola "counts on Austrian private investment in all areas of its economy".

Cited in another CIPRA communiqué, to which VerAngola had access, the head of state said that the country "appreciates" the degree of friendly relations and economic collaboration that the two countries have preserved for several years, despite having "the notion that there is a great potential" to deepen "more and more these relationships in practically all domains".

"It is a partnership of equals, in which Angolan and Austrian businessmen come out to win", he stated, adding that businessmen from Austria are welcome.

At the meeting, the note adds, "the importance of partnerships between Angolan and Austrian companies in the development of infrastructures was recognized, such as the Laúca hydroelectric plant, which has turbines supplied by an Austrian company and produces 2000 megawatts of electrical energy".

The President of the Republic also referred to the construction of two hospitals in Viana and Cacuaco, as well as the completion of the hospital in Mbanza Congo, "in charge of companies" from Austria, to show that "in the health sector this cooperation is also a reality".

In addition, the statement said, the chancellor of Austria "was invited to support the project to combat drought" underway in the south of the country.

"I challenged the chancellor to put Austria's name on a project that I consider important for Angola, because it saves human and animal lives and promotes agriculture", said João Lourenço, quoted in the statement.

"Chancellor Karl Nehammer expressed interest in collaborating with the Austrian bank to analyze the possibilities of funding, at least partially, this programme, which, as mentioned by the Angolan leader, has a high cost", the note also reads.

Angola intends to reinforce cooperation with Austria

The Minister of State for Economic Coordination, Manuel Nunes Júnior, during the Angola-Austria Business Forum, expressed the Government's desire to "reinforce bilateral cooperation with Austria in the areas of Agriculture, Information Technology, Cyber Security and Digitization , Health, Environment and Sanitation, Education, Transport and Energy and Water".

"We invite Austrian investors to invest in Angola and to contribute, in an effective way, to the diversification of the Angolan economy. Austrian investments are welcome in virtually all areas of our economy", said the minister, quoted in another statement from CIPRA, to which VerAngola had access.

"We want Austria to help us build an economy that is less and less dependent on oil, that grows in a sustained and sustainable way, that generates more and more jobs and raises the income of citizens, that allows fighting hunger and poverty in Angola and that manages to raise, more and more, the living standards of the people", said Manuel Nunes Júnior.
