In a message addressed to his counterpart, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, João Lourenço rejoiced with the date of the revolution that ended the dictatorship in Portugal and "signaled the beginning of the construction of the new political architecture".
He also highlighted that cooperation between the two countries "has been very comprehensive and fruitful", showing himself "convinced that the efforts made towards its increase may continue to bring tangible benefits to the Angolan and Portuguese peoples".
On April 25, 1974, a military movement in Portugal overthrew the government of Marcelo Caetano, Salazar's successor, initiating a process that would lead to the establishment of a democratic regime and the end of the colonial war.
