Defense Ministry rules out official involvement in US$50 million forgery

The Ministry of National Defense and Homeland Veterans has ruled out the alleged involvement of an army officer in the reform arrested on suspicion of forgery of 50 million dollars.

The ministerial body, in a clarification note to which Lusa had access, confirms that the suspect is a colonel in the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA) army in the condition of retired since 2019.

"It should be noted that he was on a national service commission, at the then Ministry of National Defense, according to the service pass that was found with him, expired in the month he was renovated", reads the note.

The Ministry of National Defense and Veterans of the Homeland "demarcates itself from any activity outside the military institution that it is carrying out, and it is up to the related authorities to proceed accordingly", the document notes.

The arrest of the 62-year-old colonel and two other citizens involved in the process and the falsified values ​​were made public on Thursday, in Huambo province.

According to the deputy director of the Criminal Investigation Service (SIC) in Huambo, Amílcar Belembe, quoted by the Angolan press, the notes were produced in a printing shop in Luanda with the purpose of being introduced to the market.
