Angolan Elizandra Wassuca wins Jiu-Jitsu world champion title

The Angolan Elizandra Gourgel Wassuca won this Wednesday, April 7, the title of Jiu-Jitsu world champion after winning the final in the category up to 70 kg, at the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship, held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

In the final, Elizandra Wassuca faced Angel Portugal, from Micronesia, coming out victorious and thus achieving the title of world champion in the sport.

Speaking to Rádio Nacional de Angola (RNA), the Angolan, born in Bié, was happy with the victory and said that the feeling of winning was "immeasurable".

"I felt something immeasurable and I went to the podium (...) and the whole world was shouting 'Angola, Angola', because it sounds good and the flag has strong colors, it is a beautiful flag," she said.

Elizandra Wassuca also tells us about a funny situation that happened at the end of the podium: "At the end a Brazilian citizen asked if I could sell the Angolan flag and I said no, I can't sell the flag and I also have colleagues who will need this flag. In other words, we are counting on more Angolans on the podium".

The athlete was also proud of the fact that she was the only Angolan among the few African athletes at the championship. "I think what made the difference here was the will to win, to know that I was the only Angolan at the world championship, representing all Angolan women, and also among the few Africans," she said.

"Angola deserves it, Angola deserves a lot, we are warriors, we have a lot of strength, we are a resilient people and I have a lot of faith in my country and I am sure that the summit will come for all of us", she considered.

Elizandra Wassuca also took the opportunity to leave a message of hope to young people. The athlete encouraged young people to be "the promoters" of the realization of their dreams and to take the reins of change.

"Young people let's be the change we want to see in our lives and in the country, not waiting for things to happen without having done anything," she said, adding that it takes initiative.

"Everything is in our hands, our country is rich, beautiful and full of opportunities. Let's focus on the opportunities and not on the crises, on the difficulties, because this Angola needs its young people to achieve the long-awaited socio-economic and sustainable development," he concludes.
