Banks in the United Arab Emirates are freezing assets related to the dos Santos family

As a response to a request for collaboration sent by the Angolan authorities, banking institutions in the United Arab Emirates are moving forward with the freezing of accounts related to the dos Santos family.

The Central Financial Intelligence Unit of the United Arab Emirates responded promptly to the Angolan authorities' request, which was sent before the beginning of Ramadan, on April 13.

According to Africa Intelligence, the unit has initiated contact with the banking institutions in that country that have accounts linked to Isabel dos Santos, to Sindika Dokolo, her late husband, and to the French-Congolese associate and childhood friend of Sindika Dokolo, Konema Mwenenge.

The request seems to have already begun to have an effect: two banks reported accounts to the intelligence unit earlier this month. According to Africa Intelligente, one of them concerns Mashreqbank, which has blocked personal and professional accounts of the Franco-Congolese.

Also last week, the former national bank of Dubai, Emirates NBD went ahead with the freezing of Konema Mwenenge's accounts.

Isabel dos Santos is currently living in Dubai, which is also home to her father, José Eduardo dos Santos, who moved there to help the businesswoman after the death of her husband, Sindika Dokolo.
