UNICEF and BFA sign a 256 million kwanza agreement to fight malnutrition in Bié

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and Banco de Fomento Angola (BFA) signed Tuesday in Luanda a 256 million kwanza financial agreement to reduce child malnutrition in Bié province.

According to a UNICEF press release, to which Lusa agency had access, the project with preventive and curative interventions in favor of children under 5 years old, aims to reduce acute and chronic malnutrition in the province of Bié, in the municipality of Cunhinga.

The project, which will last for 12 months, foresees the improvement of the quality of assistance provided to pregnant women, in the postpartum period and during the child's growth, as well as, the strengthening of the qualification of all health professionals of the health unit of Cunhinga, mainly reproductive health and nutrition technicians.

"For BFA, children's development is important for the future of Angola, so by supporting initiatives or projects focusing on health, education and social and financial inclusion, the bank understands that it is possible to improve their living conditions and those of their families, ensuring their resilience, sustainability and confidence in the future," the statement said.

UNICEF's representative in Angola, Ivan Yerovi, cited in the document, said that the partnership between the two institutions "is a testimony that the private sector will play a key role in Angola's development.

"BFA has focused on the welfare of children and women who find themselves in difficult situations. We hope that this partnership will inspire other organizations to put children on their business agenda," Ivan Yerovi stressed.

The agreement was signed by the president of BFA's executive committee, Luís Gonçalves, and the administrator, Vera Escórcio, and by UNICEF's acting representative, Andrew Trevett, and the deputy operations representative, Kateryna Lytvynenko.
