FNLA leader announces reelection for third "transition" term

The leader of the National Front for the Liberation of Angola (FNLA), one of the country's three historic parties, announced this Thursday his reelection, for what he called a "transitional leadership" until 2022.

:

In a press conference, Lucas Ngonda, 81 years old, in the leadership of the party since 2010, said that in 2022, an extraordinary congress will be held, to elect the head of the list and candidates for deputies in the general elections of the same year.

The FNLA, one of the three movements fighting for the independence of Angola, will hold its 5th ordinary congress between June 16 and 19. Joveth de Sousa, Fernando Pedro Gomes, Tristão Ernesto and Laiz Eduardo are also running for the leadership of the party.

Lucas Ngonda stressed that the party has been facing an internal crisis after the death of its founder leader, Holden Roberto, in 2007, and that all efforts to reconcile militants have been unsuccessful.

"The major problem facing the party is related to social issues, derived from the little assistance its militants receive from the authorities in law. In addition to this issue, there is the non prioritization of the party's unity, in detriment of personal interests", explained Lucas Ngonda, quoted by Angop.

According to the contested leader, "throughout all the discussions held, in recent years, the problem of unity of the FNLA was not treated as a fundamental problem, but was relegated to a secondary plan.

Lucas Ngonda, harshly criticized by party militants, who blame him for the poor performance of the political force in recent years, was confirmed by the Constitutional Court in 2011 as president of the FNLA, based on the results of a congress held in 2004, in which he was elected first vice president of the party.

In the various general elections in which the party has participated, the results have been dropping, having, in 1992 five deputies, in 2008 three, in 2012 two, and in 2017 only one seat, represented by Lucas Ngonda.

In 2018, more than three hundred party militants held a vigil for more than a week, calling for Lucas Ngonda to step down as FNLA leader, but dialogue between the parties was not successful.
