Covid-19: death toll in Africa rises to 1589 in almost 37,000 cases

The number of covid-19 deaths in Africa has risen to 1589 in the past few hours, with nearly 37,000 cases of the disease reported in 52 countries, according to the latest statistics on the continent's pandemic.

According to the African Union's Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), in the last 24 hours the death toll has risen from 1521 to 1589, while infections have increased from 34,915 to 36,847.

The total number of recovered patients rose from 11,309 to 12,071.

North Africa remains the region most affected by the disease, with 1035 deaths and 14,485 cases recorded.

In West Africa, there are 228 deaths and 9465 infections.

Southern Africa accounts for 117 deaths, in 5753 cases of covid-19.

The pandemic affects 52 of the 55 countries and territories in Africa, with five countries - South Africa, Algeria, Egypt, Morocco and Cameroon - concentrating about half of the infections by the new coronavirus and more than two thirds of the deaths associated with the disease.

Egypt has 380 deaths and 5268 infected, South Africa counts 103 dead and 5350 infected patients, while Morocco has 168 fatalities and 4321 cases and Cameroon has 61 killed and 1832 infected.

The highest number of fatalities is recorded in Algeria (444), in 3848 infected patients.

Among the Portuguese-speaking African countries, Guinea-Bissau is the country with the most infections, with 197 cases, including the prime minister in power and three more members of his government, and records a death.

Cape Verde has 113 cases, and one death, and Mozambique has 76 reported cases of the disease.

Angola has 27 confirmed cases of covid-19 and two dead and São Tomé and Príncipe has 14 positive cases.

Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), has 315 positive cases of infection and one dead, according to Africa CDC.

Globally, according to a report by the AFP news agency, the covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 224,000 deaths and infected more than 3.1 million people in 193 countries and territories. About 890,000 patients were considered cured.
