Africa exceeds 1500 dead in nearly 35,000 cases of covid-19

The number of covid-19 deaths in Africa has risen to 1521 in the past few hours, with almost 35,000 cases of the disease reported in 52 countries, according to the latest statistics on the continent's pandemic.

According to the African Union's Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), in the last 24 hours the death toll has risen from 1467 to 1521, while infections have increased from 33,273 to 34,915.

The total number of recovered patients rose from 10,091 to 11,309.

North Africa remains the region most affected by the disease and has already exceeded one thousand deaths (1004) in 13,986 registered cases.

In West Africa, there are 218 deaths and 8,824 infections.

Southern Africa accounts for 107 deaths, in 5369 cases of covid-19.

The pandemic affects 52 of the 55 countries and territories in Africa, with five countries - South Africa, Algeria, Egypt, Morocco and Cameroon - concentrating about half of infections by the new coronavirus and more than two thirds of deaths associated with the disease.

Egypt registers 359 deaths and exceeded 5,000 infected (5042), South Africa counts 93 dead and 4996 infected patients, while Morocco totals 165 fatalities and 4252 cases and Cameroon counts 59 dead and 1806 infected.

The largest number of fatalities is recorded in Algeria (437), in 3649 infected patients.

Among the Portuguese-speaking African countries, Cape Verde leads in number of infections, with 113 cases, and keeps the record of one dead.

Mozambique has 76 declared cases of the disease and Guinea-Bissau has 78 cases of infection with the new coronavirus, with one dead, including the prime minister in power and three more members of his government.

Angola has 27 confirmed cases of covid-19 and two dead and São Tomé and Príncipe, the last Portuguese-speaking African country to detect the disease in its territory, has 11 positive cases.

Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), has 315 positive cases of infection and one dead, according to Africa CDC.
