Covid-19: Africa with 1,119 dead, 22,275 infected and 5,489 recovered

The number of those infected with covid-19 in Africa rose to 22,275, of whom 5,489 recovered from the disease, with 1,119 already dead, the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC) revealed this Monday.

According to the bulletin updating pandemic data in Africa, in the last 24 hours those infected by this pandemic have risen from 21,096 to 22,275.

Those recovered, which on Sunday totalled 4,974, are now 5,489.

In relation to the dead, there has been an increase from 1,055 to 1,119.

North Africa remains the most affected region: 9,563 cases, 2,162 recovered and 795 dead.

The pandemic affects 52 out of 55 countries and territories in Africa, with five countries - South Africa, Algeria, Egypt, Morocco and Cameroon - concentrating more than half of the infections and deaths associated with the new coronavirus.

South Africa remains the country with the highest number of cases (3,158), with 54 deaths, but the highest number of deaths is in Algeria (375), with 2,629 infected.

Egypt has 3,144 infected and 239 dead, while Morocco totals 2,855 cases and 141 fatalities. Cameroon accounts for 42 deaths out of 1016 infected.

Among Portuguese-speaking African countries, Cape Verde leads in number of infections, with 61 cases and one death.

Guinea-Bissau accounts for 50 people infected by the new coronavirus and Mozambique has 39 reported cases of the disease.

Angola has 24 confirmed cases of covid-19 and two deaths and Sao Tome and Principe, the last Portuguese-speaking African country to detect the disease in its territory, still has no registered cases, after a first identification of four positive cases that were not confirmed in the second analysis.

In Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), 79 positive cases of infection have been confirmed, according to Africa CDC.

Globally, the covid-19 pandemic has already caused more than 165,000 deaths and infected more than 2.3 million people in 193 countries and territories.
