PGR puts more than 2800 defendants at provisional release because of covid-19

The Attorney General's Office (PGR) has provisionally released over 2800 defendants. The decision, which had already been revealed earlier this month, aims to minimize the impacts of the covid-19 pandemic.

According to the OPG, in recent weeks a total of 2,877 defendants have been released on remand, who were serving the most serious measure of duress, pre-trial detention.

Hélder Pitta Gróz, the attorney general of the Republic, highlighted the work carried out by the magistrates of the Public Prosecution, who have made an extra effort to analyze all the cases that are under preparatory instruction.

The official, cited by Angop, asked the judges to continue the hard work and stressed that the work has been rigorous, since "democratic legality must be defended in all circumstances.

Considering that the actions taken must be for the common good, Hélder Pitta Gróz admitted that there is a need to face the "functions in an integral way and in plenitude, with abnegation and risk consciences".
