Covid-19: Defendants with prison sentences of up to two years to be released on remand

The Attorney General's Office (PGR) has decided to release the defendants who are in pre-trial detention and defendants with sentences of up to two years imprisonment. The decision aims to minimize the impacts of the covid-19 pandemic.

According to a statement, published on the government website, the provisional release of the defendants is expected to begin later this week.

In order to proceed with the measures now imposed, the OPG of the Southern Judicial Region has asked the Public Prosecutor's Office to re-examine the coercive measures applied to the defendants who are in pre-trial detention, so that they can leave the prison temporarily.

As for the defendants, the note states, the judges of the Public Prosecutor's Office should examine the cases together with the judicial magistrates "to release all defendants sentenced with prison sentences of up to two years".

The decision was expressed through "a circular from the Office of Accompanying and Coordinating Southern Judicial Region", released Wednesday, which "indicates that the measure results from the serious moment that the country and the world are going through with the covid-19 pandemic".
