Moxico: municipal hospital without operating room for nine years due to lack of oxygen

The operating room at the Hospital Municipal do Moxico (HMM) – located in the capital Luena and the second largest unit in the province – has been paralyzed for nine years due to lack of oxygen. The information was confirmed by Jorgina Muhunda, director of the institution.

:

This fact was confirmed during a visit by the provincial governor to the unit. Ernesto Muangala left the promise that within three months the oxygen shortage situation will be solved. For this, he said, the General Hospital do Moxico (HGM), with a production capacity of 80 bottles of oxygen per day (about 1000 liters), will start to meet the needs of other units in the province.

Another problem encountered, reports Angop, is the fact that the unit inaugurated in 2004 does not have an obstetrician in its delivery service unit. This shortage causes, on average and per week, eight patients with complicated deliveries and need for surgery to be transferred to the provincial maternity hospital. The deliveries that still take place in this hospital unit are ensured by 15 technicians and specialized midwives.

In financial terms, and with a view to the hospital unit's self-sustainability, the provincial governor said that the Government is working on approving its statute, so that it can be budgeted accordingly.

In addition to visiting the Hospital Municipal do Moxico, Ernesto Muangala also visited the Hospital Geral do Moxico – where he verified the level of care provided by pediatric services – as well as the Medical Center in the centrality Heróis de Cangamba.
