Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency in Central Africa opened in Luanda

Angola has, as of this Friday, the regional headquarters of the Center for Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency of Central Africa (CEREEAC). The infrastructure was inaugurated, in the municipality of Viana, in the capital, by the Minister of Energy and Water, João Baptista Borges.

The Ministry of Energy and Water refers, in a statement to which VerAngola had access, that the center is "a specialized institution of the Economic Community of Central African States (CEEAC)", whose mission is to "ensure the coordination of the implementation CEEAC policy on renewable energy and energy efficiency and promote the creation of an integrated and inclusive CEEAC market for related products and services".

The advantages for Angola with the operation of the said center are many, says the authority, which advances that the infrastructure will provide "the deepening of cooperation relations in the technical and socio-economic area in the field of renewable energies between the CEEAC States".

In addition, it will also "increase the level of electricity production from renewable sources, as well as the interconnection of power lines in the respective territories".

Among the advantages, there is also the "cross-border electrification of localities and agglomerations", as well as "the close cooperation and neighborly relations between the Member States, through the development of infrastructures that will boost their economic activities, contributing to the strengthening of existing friendships".

João Baptista Borges, who was speaking on the occasion, highlighted the "enormous energy potential" of the country, referring, by way of example, to biomass, sun and water.

Quoted in the statement, the official mentioned the "high cost of generating energy from thermal sources, in addition to being polluting", being, in his opinion, "imperative to promote cheap energy and at all levels viable".

Thus, on this path, he reiterated the country's commitment to the reduction of polluting energy.

With the centre, according to the holder of the Energy and Water portfolio, the country will benefit from "the experience of CEEAC Member States in this important field".

He also said that "the Executive intends, in addition to what has been carried out so far in the field of renewable energies, to go further, having the full conviction that this will help to solve the problems of access to electricity", adds the statement.

"CEREEAC resulted from the meeting of ministers responsible for energy from CEEAC member states, held on June 3, 2021 and has the support of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (ONUDI)", reads the note.

The activity was honored by members of the Government, ambassadors, with emphasis on the Embassy of Austria, represented by its ambassador, "having been the first institution to support the initiative of creating CEREEAC, having even supported it financially".

In addition, "representatives of international institutions such as the World Bank, BAD, European Union, IRENA (International Agency for Renewable Energy), ONUDI, companies in the electricity sector, companies that collaborate in the sector, such as Huawei, among other invited entities", completes the statement.
