MPLA celebrates the anniversary of the battle of Cuito-Cuanavale as a “decisive milestone” for the liberation of Southern Africa

The Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA,) marked, this Wednesday, the 24th anniversary of the battle of Cuíto-Cuanavale, which it classified as a “decisive milestone” for the liberation of Southern Africa.

The battle of Cuíto-Cuanavale is historically considered as the biggest military confrontation of the Angolan civil war, which took place between November 15, 1987 and March 23, 1988, being considered the second biggest ground battle of the 20th century, only surpassed by that of Kursk. , in World War II.

The site of the battle was in the south of Angola, in the region of Cuíto Cuanavale, province of Cuando-Cubango, where the Angolan government army, reinforced with Cuban military personnel, and UNITA, which had neighboring South Africa, faced off. , then still under the 'apartheid' racial segregation regime.

"On this festive occasion, the MPLA Political Bureau defends the deepening of bilateral and multilateral relations with all countries, with priority to those of the Central and Southern Africa Region, aiming, above all, at the creation of a just and democratic social order on the continent, through of the search for collective solutions to the problems of this geographical portion known as the 'Cradle of Humanity', reads the party's communiqué.

In the note, the MPLA pays "deep tribute to the Heroes who participated in the Battle of Cuíto-Cuanavale and who, with fearless bravery, wrote one of the most brilliant pages in the History of Angola, which all citizens have the duty to preserve and disseminate with indelible value of our collective memory".

The date, Liberation Day of Southern Africa, is invoked by the MPLA to be "celebrated with the feeling of reflection around a just and sustainable solution, which guarantees economic and social development and prosperity for African peoples".

"In this sense, the MPLA highlights Angola's decisive role in the search for peaceful solutions to end the armed conflicts in Africa, in particular, and in the world, in general", concludes the note on the occasion.
