Cafunfo: association asks PGR to justify detention of MPPLT leader

The Justice, Peace and Democracy Association (AJPD) announced that it has asked the Attorney General of the Republic, Hélder Pitta Gróz, to justify the arrest of the leader of the Portuguese Protectorate Movement Lunda Tchokwe (MPPLT), José Mateus “Zeca Mutchima”.

:

In a press release, AJPD states that it formally asked, "by registered letter", Pitta Gróz "that the agency under its direction should publicly provide information on the legal grounds that support the arrest and consequent preventive detention" of the MPPLT leader .

AJPD also requests that the Attorney General's Office provide "more information that this State body deems pertinent to help dispel doubts about the dignified treatment that should be given to him even though he is preventively detained, such as, for example, the right to visit. ".

The mining village of Cafunfo, municipality of Cuango, eastern Angola, focused the attention of authorities and members of civil society following incidents of January 30, which the authorities considered an "act of rebellion" and others describe as "peaceful demonstration" ".

According to the police, about 300 people linked to the MPPLT, which has been defending autonomy in the region for years, tried to invade Cafunfo police station in the early hours of January 30, and in defense, the order and security forces killed six people. .

The police version is contradicted by MPPLT leaders, opposition political parties and local civil society who speak of more than a dozen deaths in an attempted demonstration.

Following the incidents, the leader of the MPPLT, José Mateus "Zeca Mutchima" has been detained in Luanda since 8 February, indicted for the crimes of "association of wrongdoers and armed rebellion".

In the statement released, the ADJP said it "let the prosecutor general of the Republic of Angola know that" the peaceful defense of administrative autonomy for a province itself is not a crime ", evoking the Social Renewal Party (PRS), which "has been defending a Federal State for Angola during several electoral campaigns, without, however, its presidents or members being preventively arrested".
