Media regulator worried about shunning politicians

The Governing Board of the Angolan Social Communication Regulatory Authority (ERCA) expressed concern about the systematic way in which some media and journalists abuse political actors, seriously violating their personality rights.

:

The deliberation that came out of the plenary session held on Wednesday and distributed to the press essentially reiterates the content of the February decisions, taking into account the need to safeguard the best political climate in the context of a pre-election year.

"The Board of Directors is also concerned about the systematic way in which some media and journalists disapprove of political actors, seriously violating their personality rights", the note emphasizes.

With attention turned to the current political climate between the various forces, which is expected to become increasingly tightened, within the limits allowed by the democratic regime, ERCA recommends that the different bodies "have the best consideration, in their performance daily, by the principle of effective editorial responsibility and its consequences in case of violation of the norms that are reflected in the different diplomas that are part of the legislative package of the media, with emphasis on the Press Law ".

"Since this entity is in the first institutional line as the guarantor of the application of the aforementioned principle, the Governing Board expressed concern about the ostensible way in which the current rules are sometimes violated in the unequal treatment that is given to the protagonists of political-party life , is highlighted in the document.

The agency, stressing that it does not have the competence to directly interfere in the editorial management of each body, "even if it is not its intention", ERCA believes that society also has a legitimate right to comment on the quality of journalism practiced in the country, within the framework participatory democracy itself, which is a constitutional right, and the criticisms of its performance should therefore not be ignored.
