Basketball Federation owes over 1.5 million, warns management commission

The alert was sent by Gustavo da Conceição, coordinator of the Management Committee of the Angolan Basketball Federation (FAB). The official says he found a debt of more than 1.5 million dollars at the institution.

In an interview with TPA, the official considered catastrophic the situation experienced in the federation from a financial point of view. He made it known that the federation owes salaries to officials, athletes and coaches who have served the national teams. Nor did former federation president Hélder da Cruz “Maneda” and national coach William Bryant Voigt have been paid.

In total, the debts amount to almost 300 million kwanzas, said the official. “The situation of the Angolan Basketball Federation is catastrophic because from a financial point of view it is practically zero. The Management Committee found an amount of claims that are unsustainable”, he said.

Also according to Gustavo da Conceição, the total payment of the contracted debt - and taking into account the amounts attributed to the federation by the State Budget - would take between six and seven years to be settled, not counting on parallel activities.

The debt of the federation will be declared, however it is necessary to carry out a certification work to obtain real and accurate numbers, taking into account the lack of justifications, writes Angop.

The Management Commission is provisionally ahead of the Angolan Basketball Federation's destinations, due to the resignation of President Hélder Cruz. Elections are scheduled for this year. This committee includes Gustavo da Conceição - who was at the helm of the FAB for two terms (between 2004 and 2012) -, Tony Sofrimento, Anselmo Monteio, Bi Figueiredo and Brandão Júnior.
