UN opens anti-corruption agency office in Angola this year

The UN resident coordinator in Angola, Paolo Balladelli, said this Friday that the United Nations agency that fights corruption will open an office in the country, in response to a government request.

The United Nations Agency Against Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is responsible for implementing measures that reflect international drug control conventions against transnational organized crime and corruption.

“[UNODC] is already working in the country in different areas, namely to ensure that there is transparency in commercial transactions within the SADC [Southern African Development Community]”, said Paolo Baladelli, on the sidelines of the signing ceremony of the agreement cooperation between the United Nations and Angola for the 2020-2022 triennium, in Luanda.

According to the same official, the United Nations received two weeks ago, a request from the Government to request “a much stronger presence of UNODC” to reinforce the fight against corruption.

The United Nations agency, which is based in Vienna (Austria), is now evaluating the Angolan request to open an office in the country, where it will work together with other specialized offices, which should happen later this year, according to Baladelli.

Last year, in early December, UNODC organized a workshop in Luanda as part of the implementation of Angola's international commitments in the areas of drug control and transnational organized crime.
