General Bento 'Kangamba' at liberty, but banned from leaving the country

The businessman and general in the reserve, Bento dos Santos 'Kangamba', who was arrested on Saturday on suspicion of "fraud for defrauding", was released this Monday, but is prohibited from leaving the country.

According to a judicial source, Bento "Kangamba", who was this Monday heard at the National Direction of Penal Action, was released, subject to a term of identity and residence and periodic presentation to the authorities and cannot be absent from the country.

Bento 'Kangamba', who was arrested in Cunene province in southern Angola, near the border with Namibia, is suspected of having used for his own benefit about six million dollars "that would have been given to him under the pretext of financing a campaign by his party [MPLA]," the same source said.

At the time of the arrest, a gun and valuables in kwanzas and rands (South African currency) were seized, the amount of which was not disclosed.

The general, however, contests that he was trying to flee the country, and claims that he has been cooperating with the judiciary to pay the debt incurred, without detailing its value or who the creditors are.

In a statement sent by his press office shortly after his arrest, Bento 'Kangamba' stated that there was "no exit ban or any other measure of coercion" on him and that the "alluded debt, which was forcibly contracted from someone who wanted to expatriate his capital, outside the legislation in force" was "of a much lower amount than his assets".

He also considered that the arrest was "illegal, illicit and abusive", serving to "publicly humiliate a man who contributed so much, as military, political and business, to the aggrandizement of Angola", say the general's advisors, who promise to appeal from prison.

General Bento dos Santos 'Kangamba' was arrested along the border with Namibia on suspicion of "fraud" and escape, the Attorney General's Office announced on Saturday.

Bento 'Kangamba' married a niece of former President José Eduardo dos Santos, owns the football club Kabuscorp and was the leader of the Movimento Popular de Libertação de Angola (MPLA).

In the past, the general has a history with international judicial authorities.

He has even been accused of trafficking in women by Brazilian justice and his name was also involved in an investigation in France into the fate of three million euros seized in the south of the country and allegedly destined for the general, who was in Monaco.
