According to the SJA, journalist António Domingos, provincial secretary of the union in the province of Cuanza Norte, was detained by the police while covering a protest demonstration called by civil society due to the deaths of elderly women in the agricultural fields of that province.
The police approached the journalist and even after being identified he was taken to the facilities of the Municipal Command of Ndalatando (capital of the province), "having been released after some time", it is said.
Due to the "seriousness" of the incident, the SJA "reserves the right to file a lawsuit against the perpetrators of such abuse, as it constitutes a crime of attack on freedom of the press".
A protest in the province of Cuanza Norte, due to the death in recent months of 16 elderly peasant women in circumstances still unclear, resulted in several arrests, including of UNITA deputies, the Angolan press reported this Monday.
According to the Catholic Broadcaster of Angola, the rapes and murders of 16 elderly women in agricultural fields in the municipality of Cazengo, in Cuanza Norte, were the reason for Sunday's demonstration, which was repressed by local police and resulted in several arrests.
Several citizens were arrested following the march repressed by the police, including two deputies from the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) and a journalist who was covering the event, who were later released.
In a statement, the police clarified that they were called on Sunday to restore traffic on National Road 230, which had been blocked "by unknown persons" and when restoring order, they rebelled against the police officers.
