The Presidency of the Republic, in a statement to which VerAngola had access, informs that the meeting took place late Tuesday morning, at the Presidential Palace.

"In essence, it was a diplomatic effort in the context of recent events both on the ground (accelerated deterioration of the security situation in the east of the DRC) and at the political-diplomatic level, in which the meeting of the Peace and Security Council last Friday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, stands out", the note reads.

Speaking to the press, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António, said that the "recent assessment of the evolution of the security situation in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo in Addis Ababa raised the question of what steps should be taken following the findings".

"As we know, this is a situation that worries the continent. After the Peace and Security Council meeting held in Addis Ababa [in the context of the 38th African Union summit] dedicated precisely to this conflict, it was necessary to look at the next steps in finding solutions to this tense situation for the continent and for those responsible for overseeing the fate of the African Union," he said.

"In the eastern part of the DRC, it is worth noting that military actions have worsened in recent weeks, with M23 forces taking more and more territory, the most critical case being the occupation of the city of Goma, capital of the province of North Kivu," the note says.

It should also be noted that the President of the Republic is the "mediator designated by the African Union for the conflict in eastern DRC", as well as being, since last Saturday, the President of the African Union, whose mandate lasts one year, thus extending until February 2026.

After taking Goma, the capital of North Kivu province, in a lightning offensive in late January, the Rwandan-backed M23 movement also took control of Bukavu in neighboring South Kivu province on Sunday.

Around 4000 Rwandan soldiers are present in eastern DR Congo and the latest fighting has already caused almost 3000 deaths, according to the UN.

Kinshasa accuses its neighbor of "expansionist ambitions" and of wanting to plunder the rich resources of these two provinces, which Kigali, which does not confirm its presence in the DR Congo, denies.
