Angola will host the ‘New Space in Africa 2024’ conference

In April, the country will host the 3rd edition of the ‘New Space in Africa, 2024 edition’ conference. Luanda was the city chosen to host the conference, which will take place between the 2nd and 5th of April, in an initiative of the African Union (AU) and Space in Africa.

The information was provided, this Monday, by the Minister of Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Social Communication, Mário Oliveira, in statements to the press at the end of a hearing with officials from the African Union for the Space Area, Ouattara Tidiane, and Space in Africa, Temidamo Oniosun, who are in the country to check the conditions that are being created for the event to take place in Angola.

According to the minister, the meeting also served to address the "summit with the African Union with a view to this industry contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and the AU Program", says a statement from the Ministry of Telecommunications, Technologies of Information and Social Communication, to which VerAngola had access.

For the holder of the Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Social Communication portfolio, "with this, the continent will be able to contribute to the country's progress, it will allow Angolan youth to make a greater contribution to the economy through the use of space technology, so that the science in Africa develops, benefiting the entire population".

Mário Oliveira also assured that, in the capital, those responsible for the AU and Space in Africa will share experiences with experts in the space and satellite industry, aiming to show "the Angolan space program to the world and what they have done in this regard".

Ouattara Tidiane, head of the Department of Science, Technology and Space Division of the African Union, said that the event "constitutes an opportunity for Angola" to present its potential with regard to "cadres and professionals in the space sector and its young people with mastery of technology".

Furthermore, he also expressed satisfaction with the country's level of preparation for the conference, also highlighting the "unconditional support" of the President of the Republic, João Lourenço.

In turn, Temidamo Oniosun, director of Space in Africa, made it known that the space industry event has generated approximately 20 million dollars in each edition.

He also stated that the objective of the event is, among others, "to study how resources from the space industry can be used to reduce poverty" on the African continent.

"The objective of the event, among others, is to study how the resources of the space industry can be used to reduce poverty in Africa, and around 500 delegates from different countries on the continent are expected, including the United States of America. America, China, Japan, as well as the European Union Commission", he said, quoted in the statement.

It should be noted that this year's edition of the conference will take place under the motto "The Role of Space in Reducing Poverty in Africa".
