Petro de Luanda among the 12 continental teams that will compete in the African Basketball League

The African Basketball League (BAL) announced this Wednesday the 12 teams from 12 African countries that will compete in the 2022 BAL season. The competition starts on March 5th at the Dakar Arena, in Senegal, and includes stops in Egypt (Cairo) and Rwanda (Kigali). Petro de Luanda represents the colors of Angola.

In the opening of the season, the Dakar Université Club of Senegal (DUC) will face the Seydou Legacy Athlétique Club (S.L.A.C) of Guinea, in what is the first of the 38 games that will take place in the three countries during three months of 2022.

The 12 teams, which include the 2021 BAL champions Zamalek (Egypt) to defend the title, and four other teams returning from the inaugural 2021 BAL season will be split into two groups – the Saara Group and the Nile Group. Each group will play a phase with a set of 15 games, during which each team will face once the other five teams that belong to its group, explains a statement sent to VerAngola by the organization.

The Sahara Group stage will take place at the Dakar Arena from March 5th to 15th, and the Nile Group stage will be held at the Hassan Mostafa Indoor Sports Complex in Cairo from April 9th ​​to 19th.

The top four teams from each group will qualify for the BAL play-offs, participating in a single elimination tournament and in the finals, scheduled for the Kigali Arena from 21 to 28 May.

The BAL 2022 season will reach fans in over 200 countries and territories.

"We are thrilled to welcome seven new teams and four new countries to BAL's second season," said League President Amadou Gallo Fall. "Defendant Zamalek will support the five returning teams after representing BAL in the FIBA ​​Intercontinental Cup this month in Cairo. The competition to take home the 2022 BAL Championship Trophy is heating up and we are excited about the fact that more fans have the opportunity to watch the games live in three African cities", added the official.

The champions of the national leagues of Angola, Egypt, Morocco, Rwanda, Senegal and Tunisia deserved their participation in the 2022 BAL season by winning their respective national leagues. The remaining six teams, from Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Guinea, Mozambique, South Africa and South Sudan, ensured their participation in the 'Road to BAL', through qualifying tournaments organized by the FIBA ​​Regional Office in Africa in across the continent from October to December 2021.
