Ministry of Health launches national list of essential medicines

There are about 400 drugs that make up the recently presented National List of Essential Medicines (LNME). According to the World Health Organization, these are those that meet the priority health care needs of the population.

The list launch workshop was held this Monday, at the National School of Administration and Public Policy (ENAPP), in Luanda, by the Ministry of Health through the Regulatory Agency for Medicines and Health Technology (ARMED).

According to the WHO Representative in Angola, Djamila Cabral, the list includes analgesics, anti-depressants, anti-allergics, antibiotics, among others, which citizens must have access to in quantities at any time.

For the Secretary of State for Public Health, Franco Mufinda, the LNME is a vital tool for improving medical and drug care in the country.

"The National List of Essential Medicines should be used as a reference by health professionals and not only by the National Health System in general", said the Secretary of State, in a statement to which VerAngola had access.

Franco Mufinda also clarified that the LNME strengthens and harmonizes the process of selection, acquisition, distribution, prescription, dispensing, local production and donation of medicines at different essential levels.

For the director-general of ARMED, Catiza Mangueira, the National List of Essential Medicines is a regulatory requirement that at the same time helps governments to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal, which includes access to vaccines and essential medicines that are safe, effective and of high quality. and at affordable prices.

In view of the dynamics in the development of new therapies and changes in the efficacy and safety profiles of drugs, the LNME is scheduled to be updated every three years.

During the workshop, the procedures for inclusion, exclusion and substitution of medicines described in the National List of Essential Medicines were clarified and improved.
