According to Banco de Portugal figures, obtained from the statistical series of the National Statistics Institute, and available on the financial regulator's website, emigrants working in the PALOP sent 258.9 million euros in 2021, which represents a increase of 2.3 percent compared to the 253.1 million euros sent in the previous year.

The value of remittances from the PALOP is the highest since 2013, the best year ever, in which Portugal received 316 million euros from Portuguese-speaking African countries.

The beginning of the last decade, moreover, saw a strong rise in remittances, which jumped from 141 and 151 million in 2010 and 2011 to 278 million euros in 2012 and 316 million euros in 2013.

As usual, Angola represents most of these values. Thus, Portuguese emigrants in the second largest oil producer in sub-Saharan Africa sent 251.8 million euros last year, which represents an increase of 2.5 percent compared to the 245.5 million sent during 2020.

Globally, remittances from emigrants grew 1.8 percent to break the record, reaching 3,677.7 million euros in 2021, the best year since 2001.
