Twenty years later, former África Têxtil workers will receive delayed salaries

The 400 plus ex-workers of Africa Textile may see some light at the end of the tunnel in the coming days: the former employees are hoping to receive the wages that have not been paid for the last two decades.

According to Jornal de Angola, the factory's Trade Union Committee has been carrying out a proof of life process since last Friday. It is also expected that by the end of next month, the Institute for Management of Assets and State Holdings (IGAPE) will move forward with other processes related to delayed salaries.

These processes give some hope to the company's 435 former employees, who between 2000 and 2020 did not receive their salaries.

Rogério Alfredo Cabral, first secretary of the Trade Union Committee of former employees of the factory, cited by Jornal de Angola, admitted that the process of payment has been complicated to win: "It is a battle that the former workers of the only textile factory in central and southern Angola have been fighting, after two vigils, one on December 10, 2020 and another on February 10, 2021. For this same reason, they also expect to be compensated due to the delays in salaries and retirement guarantees", he indicated.

The responsible considered that if the above measures are taken the claims of the ex-employees "will be overcome".

On the 10th, IGAPE and the National Institute of Social Security (INSS) sat at the table to negotiate, he said, adding that as soon as "the debt that the employer or the State has with Social Security (?) the retirement pensions will also be solved".

The responsible also made it known that if the plant manager intends to hire the former employees, they are available to return.

"We will be available to return to work," he said, explaining that the former workers want the new management of África Têxtil to offer the first job to a child of each former employee, as a sign of gratitude for the work done.
