Cabinda protesters detained by police released five hours later

The six Cabinda demonstrators arrested on Monday by the police were left, five hours later, in an area en route to Bengo province, without any explanation, a source close to the demonstration's promoters told Lusa.

According to the president of the Association for the Development of Human Rights Culture (ACDH) of Cabinda, Alexandre Kuanga, the protesters, who were detained after 11 am on Monday, when they intended to demonstrate in front of the Portuguese embassy in Angola, " were abandoned on the street at about 17:00 on the way to Bengo ".

Alexandre Kuanda said that the six protesters "had to find ways to get to their homes".

"It has been like this the behavior of the National Police in Luanda and also in other provinces. They take protesters, some of them are abandoned in the forest and others leave in remote areas to create difficulties and make the right to demonstrate unfeasible," he accused.

The human rights activist says he is outraged by the actions of the police, lamenting the violation of the Constitution, which guarantees the right of citizens to speak out.

"It is not known whether the Angolan Constitution is to defend, guarantee the fundamental freedoms of citizens or to guarantee the MPLA Government's permanence in power," he said.

"Because it is unacceptable that whenever people, young people, want to speak out about situations that affect the economic, social and even political life of the citizens, the police look for reasons to make the citizens of Cabinda unfeasible, and much more," he stressed.

The president of the ACDH said that for more than five hours his companions were locked in the vehicle, with two policemen, who did not inform the reasons for that situation or the place to which they were being directed, until they decided to abandon them in an area that managed to identify.

"They didn't say anything, they just abandoned us on the street after about five hours of driving," he said.

The demonstration, which was not authorized by the Luanda provincial government, was scheduled for February 1, the date on which the Simulambuco Treaty was signed, which sealed the creation of a Portuguese protectorate in the Cabinda region.

The Portuguese embassy was the place chosen to demonstrate "so that Portugal can intervene, so that there is peace in Cabinda and stop the conflict that exists in Cabinda, as a result of this Alvor agreement in violation of the Simulambuco Treaty", explained Alexandre Kuanga .
