Covid-19 has already caused 102,097 deaths in Africa

Southern Africa remains the most affected region, with 1,817,089 cases and 55,634 deaths. Within this region, South Africa, the country worst hit by covid-19 on the continent, accounts for 1,505,586 infections and 49,413 deaths.

North Africa is the second hardest hit by the pandemic: 1,150,957 infected and 32,398 dead.

East Africa counts 396,551 infections and 7447 deaths, while in West Africa the number of infections is 380,279 and the number of deaths is 4873.

Central Africa has 99,923 cases and 1745 deaths.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most deaths after South Africa, has 10,443 deaths and 179,407 infected, followed by Morocco with 8574 deaths and 481,709 cases.

Among the most affected countries are also Tunisia, with 7843 deaths and 229,781 cases, Algeria, with 2969 deaths and 112,187 infected, and Ethiopia, with 2305 deaths and 154,257 infections.

Regarding the Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique records 606 deaths and 56,595 cases, followed by Angola (500 deaths and 20,854 cases of infection), Cape Verde (144 deaths and 15,089 cases), Equatorial Guinea (91 deaths and 5852 cases), Guinea-Bissau (47 deaths and 3156 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (26 deaths and 1655 cases).

The first case of covid-19 in Africa appeared in Egypt on February 14, 2020, and Nigeria was the first sub-Saharan African country to record cases of infection on February 28.

The covid-19 pandemic has caused at least 2,474,437 deaths worldwide, resulting from more than 111 million cases of infection, according to an assessment by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China.emia in the region.
