Covid-19: Africa with 3.83 million cases and 101,350 deaths

The African continent records 3,830,631 cases of infection with the new coronavirus, including 101,350 deaths, 11,055 more patients and 357 more fatalities than Sunday morning, according to the latest official pandemic data for the region.

According to the African Union Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with data as of 6 p.m. local time, Africa now records 3,383,956 recoveries, up 11,466 from Sunday morning's bulletin data.

With these data, the number of recoveries thus continues to be higher than the number of new infections counted daily in the organization's 55 member states.

Southern Africa remains the most affected region, with 1,812,602 cases and 55,199 deaths. Within this region, South Africa, the country worst hit by covid-19 on the continent, accounts for 1,503,796 infections and 49,053 deaths.

North Africa is the second hardest hit by the pandemic, with 1,146,842 infected and 32,220 dead.

East Africa has 393,703 infections and 7387 deaths, while West Africa has 378,023 infections and 4808 deaths.

Central Africa has 99,461 cases and 1736 deaths.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most deaths after South Africa, has 10,353 deaths and 178,151 infected, followed by Morocco with 8554 deaths and 481,155 cases.

Among the most affected countries are also Tunisia, with 7793 deaths and 228,362 cases, Algeria, with 2963 deaths and 111,825 infected, and Ethiopia, with 2279 deaths and 152,806 infections.

Regarding the Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique records 599 deaths and 56,160 cases, followed by Angola (499 deaths and 20,519 cases of infection), Cape Verde (144 deaths and 15,048 cases), Equatorial Guinea (89 deaths and 5798 cases), Guinea-Bissau (47 deaths and 3115 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (22 deaths and 1628 cases).

The first case of covid-19 in Africa appeared in Egypt on February 14, 2020, and Nigeria was the first sub-Saharan African country to record cases of infection on February 28.

The covid-19 pandemic has caused at least 2,466,453 deaths worldwide, resulting from more than 111 million cases of infection, according to an assessment by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China.
