According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), the total number of infected in the 55 member states of the organization is 3,796,354 and that of recovered in the last 24 hours is 13,772, for one total of 3,346,404 since the beginning of the pandemic.
Southern Africa continues to be the most affected region, exceeding 1.8 million infected (1,800,047), and registers 54,709 deaths from infection with the disease. In this region, South Africa, the country hardest hit by the covid-19 on the continent, has 1,498,766 cases and 48,708 deaths.
North Africa is the second most affected area by the pandemic, with 1,139,569 infected and 31,862 fatalities.
East Africa accounts for 386,792 infections and 7297 deaths, while in West Africa the number of infections is 371,908 and that of deaths is 4707.
Central Africa has 98,038 cases and 1719 deaths.
Egypt, which is the second African country with the most fatalities, after South Africa, has 10,201 deaths and 176,333 infected, followed by Morocco, with 8,524 fatalities and 480,066 cases.
Among the countries most affected are also Tunisia, with 7684 deaths and 226,015 cases, Algeria, with 2952 deaths and 111,326 infected, and Ethiopia, with 2249 fatalities and 150,179 infections.
In relation to Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique recorded 571 deaths and 53,527 cases, followed by Angola (498 deaths and 20,454 cases of infection), Cape Verde (142 deaths and 14,885 cases), Equatorial Guinea (88 deaths and 5747 cases) , Guinea-Bissau (46 dead and 3025 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (20 killed and 1535 cases).
