Covid-19: Africa with 293 more deaths in the last 24 hours totals 3,750,266 cases

Another 293 covid-19-related deaths have been reported in the past 24 hours in Africa, which now counts 3,750,266 infected, according to the latest official data on the pandemic in this region.

According to the African Union's Disease Control and Prevention Center (Africa CDC), the total death toll has risen to 98,480 in the past 24 hours, with an additional 9969 infected.

The recovered are now 3,290,070, plus 9177 in the last 24 hours.

Southern Africa remains the most affected region, with 1,783,461 infected and 53,679 killed.

In this region, only South Africa, which is the country hardest hit by covid-19 on the continent, has 1,491,907 cases and 47,899 deaths.

North Africa is the second most affected area by the pandemic: 1,130,519 infected and 31,411 fatalities.

East Africa accounts for 380,065 infections and 7,161 deaths, while in West Africa the number of infections is 361,895 and that of deaths is 4567.

Central Africa has 94,326 cases and 1662 deaths.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most fatalities, after South Africa, has 9994 deaths and 173,813 infected, followed by Morocco, with 8477 fatalities and 478,474 cases.

Among the six most affected countries are Algeria, with 2941 deaths and 110,619 cases, Ethiopia, with 2194 fatalities and 147,092 infections, and Kenya, with 1795 deaths and 102,867 infected.

In relation to Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique recorded 535 deaths and 50,265 cases, followed by Angola (492 deaths and 20,366 cases of infection), Cape Verde (139 deaths and 14,741 cases), Equatorial Guinea (87 deaths and 5694 cases) , Guinea-Bissau (46 dead and 2924 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (19 killed and 1482 cases).

The first case of covid-19 in Africa emerged in Egypt on 14 February 2020, and Nigeria was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to register cases of infection on 28 February.

The covid-19 pandemic caused at least 2,394,541 deaths worldwide, resulting from more than 108.5 million cases of infection, according to a report made by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China.
