Pompeo says US supports Angola in holding those involved in corruption accountable

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Monday that the United States is ready to help Angola hold those involved in corruption scandals accountable and promote "clean and transparent" transactions.

Asked about Angola's requests for collaboration with various countries to repatriate capital and hold those involved in corruption scandals accountable, Pompeo replied that the United States supports these efforts worldwide and wants financial transactions "to be clean and transparent.

"When we discover that this is not the case, the United States will use all its resources to correct what is wrong. We will certainly do the same to help Angola," the US official said in a statement to journalists at a press conference at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MIREX) in Luanda after a meeting with his counterpart, Manuel Augusto.

Pompeo, who arrived in Angola on Sunday evening for a short visit, met this morning at the Presidential Palace of the Upper City with the President of the Republic, João Lourenço.

On a possible visit by the US President to Angola, Pompeo said he had received an invitation from João Lourenço who will hand over to Donald Trump, but said he was not in a position to respond if the meeting could take place this year, an "election year" in which the US President will be "very busy".
