Angolan opposition calls on Mozambican government to protect Venâncio Mondlane

National opposition parties united in the United Patriotic Front wrote to Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi asking for protection for Venâncio Mondlane, considering that putting his physical integrity at risk or arresting him “could lead the country to chaos”.

Presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, supported by the Podemos party, claimed victory in the elections and has led the biggest challenge to the electoral results ever in Mozambique from abroad, citing security concerns, and announced his return to the country this Thursday.

“We hereby request, in the name of the historical ties that connect our two countries, that Your Excellency commit himself institutionally and personally to the protection of Venâncio Mondlane, as we realize that, as he is at the head of the broad movement that demands electoral truth, an attitude against their physical integrity or their deprivation of liberty could lead the country to chaos”, says the letter endorsed by opposition leaders.

The letter is signed by the leaders of UNITA, Adalberto Costa Júnior, Democratic Bloc, Filomeno Vieira Lopes, PRA-JÁ to serve Angola, Abel Chivukuvuku and Francisco Viana, from civil society, who recall the “politically motivated” deaths of personalities linked to Mondlane and his party in unclear circumstances.

Expressing solidarity with the Mozambican people, the Angolan opposition emphasizes that chaos “is in no one’s interest”, not even the sectors of great power “who are slow to understand that it is necessary to change the forms of governance” and that the electoral system of many African countries remains suffering “from the original vice of the party-state, from the opacity and lack of scrutiny of all actors”.

The United Patriotic Front tells Nyusi that “the aftermath of the civil wars” in Mozambique and Angola, associated with inequality and poverty, threaten the scope of democracy and pose risks of a return to war, calling for an “inclusive dialogue” with all forces nationals

“We would greatly appreciate it if the Mozambican government agreed that Venâncio Mondlane is a decisive player in the search for a solution to the crisis and was able to leave him in the hands of his supporters and, in freedom and safety, be able to contribute to clarifying the truth and discuss it with others. partners the paths to peace, tranquility and progress in Mozambique”, they highlight.

Angolan opposition leaders are calling on the national government to continue with a policy of encouraging peace and stability in Mozambique.

Venâncio Mondlane, who has been out of Mozambique since October 21, when the post-election protests of October 9 broke out, announced that he will return via Maputo international airport.

The Constitutional Council (CC) of Mozambique has set January 15 as the date for the inauguration of the new President of the Republic, who succeeds Filipe Nyusi.

On December 23, the CC, the last instance of appeal in electoral disputes, proclaimed Daniel Chapo, candidate supported by the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO, in power), as the winner of the election for president of the Republic, with 65.17 percent. of votes, succeeding Filipe Nyusi in office, as well as the victory of FRELIMO, which maintained its parliamentary majority, in the general elections of October 9.

The Supreme Court stated that there is no arrest warrant issued for Venâncio Mondlane, but the Public Prosecutor's Office opened proceedings against the presidential candidate, as the mastermind behind the demonstrations, in Maputo city and Maputo province alone, for more than two million euros, alleging losses in the public sector.
