New license plates will come into force. Drivers can no longer place the plate “on any corner”

Starting next week, more specifically Wednesday (January 10), the implementation of new vehicle registration plates will begin. According to deputy commissioner Mateus Rodrigues, the entry into force of the new license plates will mean that drivers will no longer be able to place their plates “on any corner”.

"The news we have in relation to registration plates is that from January 10, 2024, the Republic of Angola will have a new vehicle registration system. From January 10, vehicles that are registered will receive a new (...) registration number", explained the deputy commissioner, in an interview with Rádio Nacional de Angola (RNA).

The entry into force of this measure will allow the "regularization of number plates", he said, warning that drivers will no longer be able to place a number plate "on any corner".

"What happens today will no longer happen where an individual places a number plate on any corner without following the rules, therefore, this will now be the past. From now on, a set of rules will be established by law that will define what which is the registration number or number plate to be used on vehicles, trailers", among others, he clarified, speaking to RNA.

Deputy Commissioner Mateus Rodrigues said that there are approximately 80 companies in the country "that are already within this standard", and "when registering the vehicle, citizens will be informed about these entities and will be able to choose".

However, he added, "the big gain here is that no matter which entity places the registration plate, we will now have a standardized registration plate with security elements, QR code, security tape, registration serial number, a set of security that will make it easier to get the registration number" leads to a person, for example, in an "investigation case, in a vehicle search case".

Regarding the procedures, the person responsible explained that there will be no changes: "The procedures continue to be the current ones, those that we disclosed when the vehicle title was released, there is no change in relation to the payment of judicial registration, inspection and other elements that bring together the vehicle's initial registration", he stated, explaining that the only change is the fact that, from the 10th of this month, whoever registers their vehicle will receive a new registration number.

Regarding drivers with vehicles already registered, the deputy commissioner said there was no reason to worry, as a period of two years would be stipulated to carry out the replacement. "In relation to drivers who already have their vehicles registered, they should not worry, but they will have a period of two years to replace, not the registration number because it will remain the same, but the registration plate", he stated, quoted by RNA.

The person in charge also explained that during these two years they will, through a "calendar plan, define which series will have to be changed in a given period", so that "after two years" they can have their number plates all "exchanged as the law provides".

Reiterating that this exchange will be guided by the calendar plan, the official said there was "no need for citizens to go to the registration, aviation and transit centers on the 11th to exchange". "It is not a general exchange", he added, reinforcing that "there is a period of two years" that will be guided by the calendar, the definition of which will be up to the National Police.

In terms of amounts payable, he clarified that there are no changes compared to the initial registration, however, they may change depending on the companies. "The values in relation to the initial registration, which is the responsibility of the police, continue to be the same as those we announced during the Vehicle Title (...). It is the companies that are practicing or will practice a market value, The information we initially have is that it is around 50,000 kwanzas, but it is information that must then be updated with the companies", he stated, quoted by RNA.
