Covid-19: teachers admit “destructuring” of teaching due to interruptions

Teachers considered this Monday that the constant interruptions in the school year due to covid-19 "disrupt" the teaching process and create "psychological breaks", especially for children and young people, defending technological conditions in educational establishments.

For the secretary general of the National Union of Teachers and Workers of Non-University Education (Sinptenu), Victor Gimbi, who says he is concerned about the interruptions in classes, covid-19 "came to disrupt the rhythm of social, economic, political and academic".

"We suggested, from the first moment, that the Government had to create technological conditions so that schools could have classes in videoconference, but they were limited only to putting alcohol, gel and soap and in other cases water", he said this Monday Victor Gimbi, speaking to Lusa.

The new presidential decree on the situation of public calamity in Angola, in force since the early hours of this Monday, suspends classes in general and university education until the 16th of January, and its restart is subject to an assessment of the epidemiological situation of the Covid-19.

Classes, after the break in the festive season, were scheduled to resume this Monday, January 3rd, but the high number of new cases of covid-19, particularly of the Ómicron variant, led authorities to update the decree.

The measure, which covers all public and private teaching establishments, is expressed in the presidential decree 316/21, which approves the alteration of some articles of the presidential decree 315/21 of December 24th, published in Diário da República on December 31st of 2021.

According to Victor Gimbi, the non-implementation of technological conditions in educational institutions in Angola is symptomatic of "the executive's lack of commitment to the teaching and learning process".

"So much so that he takes things very lightly and ignores the unions' suggestions for this pandemic period," he said.

The education system "was structured in such a way that it creates a chain of information for the learning of children and young people and this will objectively create a link between the contents, if it is regular", he stressed.

Sinptenu's general secretary lamented that the constant interruptions in the students' learning cycle create a "psychological void and breaks" for the regular absorption of knowledge.

"We put the boys back home to fade away and psychologically we have breaks, because the school is busy not only for learning, but for socialization, fraternity, good coexistence (...). That's what we should adopt to avoid falling out into the abyss," he pointed out.

"Covid-19 is indeed a concern that deserves the commitment of everyone to fight, but here we call for greater responsibility on the part of the executive in the adoption of efficient measures", concluded Victor Gimbi.

To contain the spread of covid-19, the process of vaccinating minors between 12 and 17 years old is also taking place and they must present the certificate or vaccination card at the beginning of school.

As of Sunday, Angola had 82,920 covid-19 cases, of which 1722 resulted in deaths and had almost 4 million people fully vaccinated (12 percent of the target population).

Covid-19 has caused 5,441,446 deaths worldwide since the start of the pandemic, according to the latest report by Agence France-Presse.

The respiratory disease is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, detected at the end of 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China, and currently with variants identified in several countries.

A new variant, Ómicron, considered worrisome and highly contagious by the World Health Organization (WHO), has been detected in southern Africa, but since the South African health authorities issued the alert on 24 November, infections in the skin have been reported. less than 110 countries, being dominant in Portugal.
