Unemployment rate fell 3.7 percent in the last quarter of 2020

The unemployment rate in the fourth quarter of 2020 in Angola fell 3.7 percent compared to the same period in 2019, estimated at around 30.6 percent, corresponding to 4.7 million unemployed in the country, was announced.

According to the director-general of the National Statistics Institute (INE), Chaney John, who presented this Tuesday the Employment Survey in Angola (IEA) for the fourth quarter of 2020, the unemployment rate fell 3.7 percent, for both men and women, with 4,747,622 unemployed.

In a press conference in Luanda, the official from INE informed that the IEA revealed that the unemployment rate, in the last three months of 2020, "was estimated at 30.6 percent, 8.9 percentage points less than the figure previous quarter and 3.7 percentage points compared to the same quarter ".

The unemployment rate in the urban area stood at 41.7 percent, "three times higher than the rural rate, which is 15.7 percentage points," she said.

Chaney Jonh also noted that the unemployment rate of the population aged 15 or over decreased by 3.4 percentage points and the group with the highest unemployment rate is in the 15 to 24 age group.

Regarding the employment rate, in the fourth quarter of 2020, "it increased, by 3.1 percent in relation to the previous quarter, by 8.3 percent, which corresponds to 824,813 people, in relation to the same quarter of 2019".

"The employment rate in the fourth quarter of 2020 was estimated at 62.8 percent, with the rural area significantly higher than the urban area, 79.4 percent and 51.4 percent, respectively. The employment rate for men exceeded that of women by four percentage points, that is, the employment rate of men stood at 64.9 percent and that of women at 60.9 percent, "he explained.

According to the director general of INE, more than half of the employed population in Angola works in the sectors of agriculture, animal production, hunting, forestry and fishing, estimated at 6.3 million people.

"The sector that employed less, in this period, was the sector of financial, real estate and consultancy activities. The age group with the highest employability rate varies between 35 and 54 years old", she pointed out.

The official also announced that the inactive population aged 15 or more decreased by 0.3 percent compared to the previous quarter and, in terms of year-on-year variation, also decreased by 14.9 percent compared to the same period in 2019.

"The rate of inactivity shows higher values ​​in the age groups of 65 years, this justified by the age group in which many are in retirement and others without physical conditions and next we also have young people between 15 and 24 years old, representing 15.3 percent of the inactivity rate, "he said.

The leader also stressed that "the indicators on the labor market show some evidence marked by the impact of the covid-19 pandemic".
