Senior Angolan magistrates head to the University of Coimbra for training

The University of Coimbra will carry out, between 11 and 29 January, an Advanced Training Course on “Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure Law and Compliance Programs” addressed to Judge Counselors of the Supreme Court and Deputy Attorneys General of Angola.

The training, with scientific coordination by Anabela Miranda Rodrigues and Maria João Antunes (professors from the Faculty of Law), will focus mainly on the new Angolan Penal and Criminal Procedure Codes, approved in November 2020 and coming into force in March.

The inaugural session of this initiative - carried out following a protocol signed between the UC and the Attorney General of the Republic of Angola in September 2019 - will take place next Monday, the 11th, starting at 10 am, at Colégio da Trindade, with interventions by the President of the Sino-Lusophone Academy of the UC and Director of the DDF, Rui de Figueiredo Marcos, the coordinator of the Advanced Training Action, Anabela Miranda Rodrigues, and the Rector of the UC, Amílcar Falcão.

This is followed by a round table on the theme "Problems and challenges of criminal justice", moderated by Licínio Lopes Martins (Professor at the DDF and member of the Superior Council for the Judiciary) and with interventions by Fernando Negrão (Member of the Assembly of the Republic and former Minister of Justice) and António Almeida Costa (Professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Porto and member of the Superior Council of the Public Ministry).

On the 29th of January, the closing session of the Advanced Training Action will have a conference by Costa Andrade, Professor of the DDF and President of the Constitutional Court.

According to the Vice-Rector of UC for External Relations and Alumni, João Nuno Calvão da Silva, this action "is a moment of great significance for the relations between Angola and Portugal". In a statement to which VerAngola had access, the official added that "for the University of Coimbra in particular, cooperating in the training of the highest Angolan magistrates on new and so structuring diplomas for the rule of law is a distinction that proves the prestige and projects an increasingly promising international future".
