Suicide cases increased in Cunene province in 2019

Suicide cases increased in Cunene province (south) in 2019 from 30 in 2018 to 64 last year, according to local police.

According to the police spokesman in Cunene, Intendant Nicolau Tuvecalela, 34 cases were recorded for hanging, 17 for taking drugs, 11 for poisoning with pesticides and two for using a gun.

Cases were registered in the municipalities of Ombadja (25), Cuanhama (24), Namacunde (7), Cahama (6), Cuvelai (2), being pointed out as supposed social and economic motivations, which affected individuals between 13 and 58 years, especially women.

The acting director of the office of Social Action, Family and Gender Equality in Cunene, Rosa Bernardo, cited by Angop, considered the numbers recorded worrying, emphasizing that several activities are already scheduled to strengthen the moralization of families for the entire province.

At least 2500 people have committed suicide in the last five years, the second leading cause of death between 15 and 55 years, according to Public Health data.
