According to the national director of the Interior Ministry's Office of Institutional Communication and Press, Waldemar José, prisons currently house more than 26,000 prisoners, with a capacity of about 21,000.
"We have half the population in custody, some of which are in excess of pre-trial detention, which means that if there is greater procedural speed the number of convicted prisoners would be much lower," he said.
Waldemar José, who was taking stock of police operations during the holiday season, said the situation at all jails in the country was stable.
“We reported the escape of six individuals in Benguela, not in a prison facility, but in cells of a police unit when there was heavy rain. There was a collapse of security mechanisms and they took advantage to evade”, he said.
