Africa with 410 more deaths and 18,089 infected by covid-19 in 24 hours

Africa has registered another 410 deaths due to covid-19 and has added 18,089 new cases in the last 24 hours, reaching a total of 57,057 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic, according to official data.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), the African continent now has a total of 2,408,064 people infected since the beginning of the pandemic in the 55 member states of the African Union.

The number of people recovered in the last 24 hours was 13,138, for a total of 2,037,148.

Southern Africa is the most affected region, with 981,746 cases of infection and 25,420 deaths recorded. In this region, South Africa, the country most affected by covid-19 in the continent, accounts for a total of 873,679 confirmed infections and 23,661 cases of deaths due to the disease.

North Africa is the second most affected area by the pandemic, with 836,010 cases of infection and 21,813 fatalities.

East Africa now has over 300,000 cases of infection (300,582) and 5595 deaths, West Africa has 220,559 infections with 2995 deaths, while Central Africa has 69,167 cases and 1234 deaths, the same as on Saturday.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most deaths, after South Africa, registers 6966 deaths and 122,609 infected, followed by Morocco, which registers 6711 deaths and 403,619 infected.

Among the six countries most affected are also Tunisia, with 3956 deaths and 113,241 infected, Algeria, with 2623 deaths and 93,065 cases, Ethiopia, with 1813 deaths and 117,542 cases, and Kenya, with 1604 deaths and 92,459 infected.

In Portuguese-speaking countries, Angola registered 372 deaths and 16,362 cases, followed by Mozambique (144 deaths and 17,042 cases), Cape Verde (110 deaths and 11,395 cases), Equatorial Guinea (85 deaths and 5195 cases), Guinea-Bissau (44 deaths and 2446 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (17 deaths and 1009 cases).

The first case of covid-19 in Africa emerged in Egypt on February 14, and Nigeria was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to register cases of infection on February 28.

The covid-19 pandemic caused at least 1,621,397 deaths from over 72.7 million cases of infection worldwide, according to a review by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected at the end of December 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China.
