Country to regulate fertilizer use in agriculture to mitigate climate change

The environmental authorities announced that the use of fertilizers for agriculture in the country will be regulated, aiming at mitigating climate change, in the light of the National Strategy for Climate Change (ENAC) of Angola 2020-2035.

According to the National Director of the Environment and Climate Action, Giza Martins, ENAC is composed of five pillars, among which the mitigation that corresponds to activities that "can contribute to reduce, avoid or remove greenhouse gas emissions".

The regulation on the use of fertilizers in the country, he explained, falls within the "domain of mitigation, because its use, when it is not done properly, when the right amounts of soil are not used, results in soil impoverishment" .

"And the reduction in the capacity of this soil to absorb carbon, so it is important that the use of fertilizer is appropriate and, for that, some regulation is proposed, in addition to training for those who use it," he said, speaking to Lusa .

The official who spoke this Tuesday, in Luanda, in the scope of the fourth round table on Climate Change, with a focus on agriculture, said that the National Strategy for Climate Change inscribes four other pillars.

In addition to mitigation, ENAC also comprises the pillars of adapting the effects of climate change, climate finance, training and technology transfer, and systematic observation and analysis of climate parameters.

According to Giza Martins, a set of concrete actions and projects, called pilot projects with the support of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), are already underway in some provinces of the country aiming to embody the objectives of ENAC .

"These are pilot projects that aim to demonstrate at national level what is the possible result when the measures contained in the strategy are applied", he stressed.

"At the moment four projects are being presented, they are concrete initiatives with a very large focus in the south center of the country", he noted.
The National Director for Environment and Climate Action also said that the capacity of farmers to align their practices with climate behavior is underway.

In relation to the National Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics of Angola (Inamet) "his capacity for forecasting and climate modeling was also strengthened", he stressed.

The round table on climate change, with a focus on agriculture, was promoted by the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Environment, in partnership with the UK embassy in Angola.
