Angola confirms the presence of the Ómicron variant

The Health Minister confirmed last Friday the presence of the Omicron variant of the SARS-COV2 virus, after receiving the results of the first 17 samples sent to the Ricardo Jorge Institute, in Portugal.

Sílvia Lutucuta said of the 17 samples, one is diagnosed with the Delta strain and 16 with the Ómicron strain.

"In relation to these data, we have the reference that all these cases are from the province of Luanda," said the minister, noting that eight cases have a travel history, with seven coming from South Africa and one from England, and eight cases no travel history.

The government official stressed that this galloping growth of cases registered in recent days, mainly with community circulation, is linked to the Ómicron variant.

"Associated with this, we have a lot of reference to the clinical manifestations that we have just mentioned and we also continue with other strains that are deadly, more lethal, such as the Delta strain", she underlined.

The head of the Health portfolio said that as soon as the first diagnoses were made in southern Africa, the country redoubled its epidemiological and laboratory surveillance measures for the diagnosis and control of this variant.

The minister stressed that Luanda continues to be the epicenter of the disease, in which it is necessary to "continue to close ranks in this relentless struggle".

"We have many active cases, many transmission chains, if the measures are not complied with, we will soon triple this number of active cases, for this reason the only powerful weapons we have is the fulfillment of individual protection measures", stressed Sílvia Lutucuta, calling for vaccination.
