Angolan football prodigy stands out abroad and dreams of replacing Bruno Fernandes at Sporting

At just 21 years old, Angolan Domingos Andrade has already proven himself to be a football prodigy. Currently playing for the B team of the Portuguese club FC Porto, the player has already spent time with another great player in Portugal, Sporting. When he was just 16 years old, Andrade already dreamed of being more than just a player and, in conversation with coach Ivo Campos, he told him that one day he would “replace Bruno Fernandes at Sporting”.

It all started at Interclube. He was only 16 years old when he was chosen by coach Ivo Campos. After playing for the Angolan club, it was the player's turn to travel across borders to Portuguese lands.

In Portugal, he has already played for two of the biggest Portuguese clubs, Sporting and Porto. He also spent a season with Felgueiras.

Although he currently plays for FC Porto's B team, this diamond in the rough could end up 'shining' in the 'dragons' first team, as the Angolan was on the radar of Porto's coach, Vítor Bruno, when he was chosen for some training matches for the A team, such as against Arouca and Amarante.

However, the Angolan prodigy began to develop while still a child and his ambition was already evident when he was still in Angola. According to coach Ivo Campos, Andrade told him about his dreams and ambitions for the future, telling him that he was going to "replace Bruno Fernandes at Sporting".

The conversation took place at Interclube: "He was only 16 years old and I asked him: 'What do you want for your future?' He could have said the usual thing, that he wanted to progress, to get to the main team, but I was left speechless. 'I'm going to replace Bruno Fernandes at Sporting', he told me", said Ivo Campos, in an interview with the newspaper Ojogo.

At the time, the coach also recalled that Domingos Andrade would arrive at training "at six in the morning and stay after training".

Andrade has also played for the national football team. And his performance at Palancas Negras continues, as he is one of the players called up by coach Pedro Gonçalves for Angola's upcoming matches against Ghana and Sudan, on 15 and 18 November, respectively, counting towards qualification for the 2025 African Cup of Nations.

Ivo Campos also told Ojogo that in 2019, "the club was having trouble registering players", and so resorted to "training, taking advantage of the great work of Pedro Gonçalves, the current Angolan coach, with the under-17 team".

"At the beginning, Domingos was very nervous, but things went well. He had a very advanced reading of the game and was a natural recoverer, he positioned himself brilliantly", he added.

After Interclube, he was followed by the Portuguese clubs of Sporting, Felgueiras and Porto.

Regarding his progress, Ivo Campos considered that now people are talking about "a different player".

"Before receiving the ball, he is always timing the time and space available for the next action", he pointed out.

Ivo Campos also spoke about the nickname of the young talent, who is also known as 'Chicharito': "In Angola, kids are given the nicknames of their father, the family patriarch or the stars they admire. I still call him 'Chicharito', but I even told him to get used to using his name in Europe, because that is the one that counts".

The coach, in an interview with Ojogo, says he believes that Andrade can become an idol in the country. According to Ivo Campos, the player does not like the attention, but lives in a "generation that excites the people": "He does not like show-off, but he is in a generation that excites the people".
