Paulo Malungo da Silva Júnior is 19 years old and is a first year law student at the Catholic University of Angola (UCAN). The young man won the contest with a literary essay. Pedro Felismino Kilai was the second student to win the contest. He is in the third year of the Cinema and Television course at the Instituto Superior Politécnico de Angola (IMETRO), is 23 years old and competed with a video.
The jury analyzed a total of 82 literary essays and seven videos, and eventually chose the works of Paulo Júnior and Pedro Kilai. According to a statement published on Ufolo's website, the jury considered that the works of these two students express the "feeling of belonging to the homeland, highlighting the ways of being, being and thinking of Angolans.
As for the literary essay, the jury considered that it presents "a poetic and creative maturity within the required linguistic rigour, as well as obedience to the rules of the award. In the video, they took into consideration the "kinetic montage of the message, with a creative black-and-white contrast approach and an individual choreography that portrays the anguish and hope of contemporary Angolan man".
Ufolo launched this contest in July with the aim of "strengthening the bonds of belonging to Angolan identity and culture, in intercultural dialogue with the world, as well as stimulating the intellectual and artistic creativity of Angolans," the statement states.
The jury met on October 22 to analyze the work based on the following criteria: contribution to the creation of an identity that promotes cultural diversity, national harmony and self-inclusion; innovation and creativity and literary and audiovisual quality.
The awards were delivered last Tuesday, November 10th. "The winner of the Ufolo Essay Prize, sponsored by the Uanhenga Xitu Foundation, received one million five hundred thousand kwanzas. The winner of the Ufolo Audiovisual Award received one million two hundred and fifty thousand kwanzas", completes the note.
