Government announces construction of 120 new markets as of the second quarter of 2021

In order to restore dignity to street vending, the Executive decided to adopt what he called “Strategy of Transition from Informal Economy to Formal Economy”. In this way, the nearly two million salespeople in informal activity on the streets and avenues of Luanda will be registered and relocated in one of the new markets, to be built gradually.

The strategy presented by the Government resulted in the elaboration of the “Project for the Requalification, Formalization and Expansion of Squares and Canteens”. This determines that the capital needs 120 markets, subdivided into three levels: logistical activity, commercialization and sale.

The main objective is to avoid the agglomeration and confusion that prevails in the markets, restoring security and dignity to the sellers.

"We are going to capitalize on a number of 120 markets and, in the case of street sales, it will have to be absorbed by the capitalization and proliferation of the proximity markets", Celso Borja, national director for MEP Population Policy, told Jornal de Angola.

The official also said that the implementation of the first supply (pilot) market is scheduled for the second quarter of next year. The strategy plans to complete the transition between the informal and formal economies in 2025.
