"On 16 October, by order of the Governor of the National Bank of Angola, José de Lima Massano, the National Bank of Angola granted Unitel Serviços Financeiros Móveis (SU), S.A. a Payment Services Provider license, at its request", can be read in a statement published on the BNA website.
This license allows the operator's clients to use Unitel's platforms to pay for purchases made online or services stipulated by contract.
According to the bank, this attribution is part of one of the "priority actions of the National Financial Inclusion Plan, which includes guaranteeing the population greater access to the financial services network". The BNA also says that this decision represents an important step towards "financial inclusion," since it will allow the population to resort to "mobile and instantaneous transfers, commonly known as mobile payments or mobile money".
Admitting that this financial inclusion is "fundamental to sustainable economic development," the BNA says it has been working towards the creation of a "modern and inclusive payments ecosystem".
"After the launch of Bankita accounts as well as simplified accounts, the National Bank of Angola is taking another step towards increasing the number of citizens with access to basic financial services to the equivalent of 50 percent of the adult population, by the end of 2022," it says.
