Born in 1951, in Bembe, in the province of Uíge, the singer entered the world of music when he stepped onto the children's stage 'Palmo e Meio', and in 1966, he continued his musical activity in some recreational and cultural spaces in the capital, writes Angop.
In addition to leaving behind 16 children, Chakaia also leaves behind a rich repertoire in musical terms, with highlights including songs such as 'Lamento de um filho', 'Papá', 'Isabel', 'Longa Marcha', 'Samba Samba', among other songs.
According to Angop, the singer was part of the band during the 1980s and 1990s.
On social media, some artists expressed their condolences over the musician's death. This is the case of Paulo Flores, who wrote on his Facebook page that Angolan music and culture "have become poorer".
"Augusto Chakaya, the great lead singer of Jovens do Prenda, has left us. The last time we were together, my father told me that when I was little, my father took me to a Jovitos rehearsal in Mutamba and told him that I dreamed of being a singer. Rest in peace, Angolan music and culture have become poorer. We thank you for your entire legacy," wrote Paulo Flores, who also sent his condolences to the family and the band.
DJ Malvado also said that "a pure and genuine voice" of the country had been silenced. "The great Augusto Chakaya, the lead singer of one of Angola's most emblematic bands, has left us. A pure and genuine voice of great sounds from our Angola has been silenced. SEMBA has become poorer. The artist is gone, but his achievements will live on forever. We will certainly continue his achievements," he wrote on his Facebook, expressing his condolences to his family, friends, fans and the band.
