Angolan doctors operate on a newborn's heart for the first time

At just 11 days old, a female baby underwent a heart operation at the Cardeal Alexandre do Nascimento Hospital Complex, in Luanda. This is the first time in the country that this type of intervention is performed on a newborn.

It was this Saturday that surgeons from the cardiac surgery operating room successfully performed the hospital's first surgery on a patient who was just 11 days old and weighed 4 kilos and 200 grams. The procedure carried out lasted approximately three hours, with great success, says the Hospital Complex in a statement to which VerAngola had access.

According to the surgeon Valdano Manuel, who led the team, the surgery was difficult due to the small size of the child. "It's difficult to work in a small space, which made the surgery more complex, but it was a success thanks to the team's immediate help," he said.

"The procedure was carried out successfully and the child is now incubated and feeding. We are all very satisfied with this", added Valdano Manuel

In the recovery room, the patient received a visit from the Minister of Health, Sílvia Lutucuta, who was accompanied by the Secretary of State for Hospital Area, Leonardo Inocêncio, the general director of the CHDCP, Carlos Alberto Masseca, among other officials.

The multidisciplinary team at the Cardeal Dom Alexandre do Nascimento Hospital Complex that performed this high-risk surgery is made up of surgeons, anestologists, perfusionists, scrub nurses, circulators, intensivists and nurses.

The child's mother, Neusa Diogo Moreira, thanked the commitment and dedication of the entire medical team, which saved her daughter's life.
